It appears that she does have a mum.
The mother of a 10-year-old French model has closed her daughter’s Facebook group after photographs of the girl in the fashion magazine Vogue raised a storm of protest.
Veronika Loubry closed the group to the public after photos of her daughter Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau – first published in the magazine’s December/January issue – appeared on the TV programme Good Morning America late last week.
Thylane is the daughter of retired French footballer Patrick Blondeau and Loubry, a French TV presenter, both aged 43.
In the photos, the 10-year-old is shown on a tiger skin wearing matching animal-print high heels, touching her lips as she looks in a mirror. She is also shown posing on a chair wearing stilettos and a dress with high slits.
Announcing her move, Loubry’s said in English on the Facebook group page: “hey guys im the mum of thylane something going ‘s wrong at the moment and bad personn in usa about pictures she make’s 8 mounths ago for vogue, thylane doesn’t know about the buzz and i want to protect her from the deapest of my heart… she’s so young … so we are going to close this accompte for a while ..i know that all of you are good person who like her so i send you a big kiss..thanks.”
Professor Catharine Lumby of the University of New South Wales, who has written on the media, children and young adults, told the Sydney Morning Herald.: ” I think we often subject children to far too much in an array of areas.”
No matter how dressed up a 10-year-old was, “she is not an appropriate object for sexual attention.
“To me, this shouldn’t just be about 10-year-old models. It should be about looking at any young person or child who is put in a situation where the pressures of the adult world are brought to bear on them.”.
Thylane, said to have been been modelling since she was five, is just the most recent of many young girls who have posed for magazines – but she is the youngest.
In 1950, Brigitte Bardot appeared on the cover of Elle at 15. In 1980, American actress Brooke Shields was 13 when she was on the cover of Vogue magazine. This year, 13-year-old Hollywood star Elle Fanning was picked as the face of Marc by Marc Jacobs.
